Der Ich-Erzähler – erst mit der Zeit versteht man, dass er eine körperliche Behinderung hat – lebt mit seinen Eltern in einem neuen Gebäude mit Blick auf die weit entfernte alte Stadt, wo sein Vater einen Laden hatte. Nachdem der alte Markt zerstört worden ist, sind sie in die Neue Stadt, am Ende einer Sandpiste geschickt worden. Viele Jahre verbringen sie in diesem Haus – darauf wartend, dass sie wieder in ihr altes Quartier zurückkehren können. Sie interessieren sich nicht für die Neue Stadt, der Vater eröffnet keinen neuen Laden – wie dies viele andere tun. Sie sind in Warteposition, im Exil, in einem Vakuum. Über die Autorin / über den Autor:Hassan Daoud was born in the village of Noumairieh in southern Lebanon in 1950 and moved as a child to Beirut. He is the author of two volumes of short stories and eight novels, four of which have appeared in English translation.
